Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes nerve pain and other symptoms due to nerve compression. The most common symptoms are pain and numbness in the sole of the foot. While the sensation of numbness may occur intermittently, the pain is often burning or stabbing in nature and can be exacerbated by prolonged standing or walking. Weakness in the foot muscles may also be among the symptoms. The severity and onset of symptoms vary greatly from person to person. In some individuals, symptoms develop gradually, while in others they may begin suddenly. Physical activity generally increases pain and other symptoms. However, if the condition becomes chronic, some individuals may experience pain or tingling even at night or while at rest.
