Prior to endovascular embolization, the patient's medical examinations are thoroughly reviewed by an Interventional Radiologist. If deemed necessary, additional or new tests may be requested. Generally, blood tests performed within the last two weeks, such as kidney function tests and coagulation parameters, are sufficient. The patient's current medication use, particularly blood thinners, is carefully reviewed, and adjustments are made if necessary for procedural safety.
A minimum of 6 hours of absolute fasting is required before the procedure, including solid and liquid foods; smoking must also be completely restricted during this period.
Depending on the specific procedure, one of the following methods of anesthesia may be preferred: local anesthesia (numbing of the intervention area), sedation/sedoanalgesia (providing deep relaxation with calming and pain-relieving medications), or general anesthesia (the patient being completely put to sleep).
