Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) examinations in premature infants are performed without general anesthesia or deep sedation. Prior to the examination, pupil-dilating eye drops are administered. It is critical that these drops are carefully diluted to an appropriate dosage, considering the infant's systemic condition. During the procedure, it is recommended that the infant not be overly full. Once the pupils are adequately dilated (typically after 30-40 minutes), a blepharostat (eyelid speculum) is gently applied to keep the eyelids open. The infant's retina is then examined using an indirect ophthalmoscope. The procedure is conducted by a physician and nurse, while families are usually asked to wait outside. The entire examination typically lasts 10-15 minutes.
