The primary aim in bronchitis treatment is to reduce inflammation in the bronchi and thin thickened mucus. Bronchitis treatment typically involves supportive care. Important components of treatment include ample fluid intake and, if a cause is suspected, eliminating or avoiding exposure to allergens, occupational irritants, or chemical agents. Since acute bronchitis is often viral, antibiotics are generally not needed. However, in a limited number of cases, antibiotics may be considered if there are indications of a bacterial infection. Particularly in recurrent bronchitis attacks without signs of infection, the possibility of asthma, whether allergic or non-allergic, must be evaluated.
