Sleeve gastrectomy is currently one of the most frequently preferred surgical methods for the treatment of morbid obesity. While it offers positive results in improving Type 2 diabetes, its direct and powerful effect may not be as significant as other metabolic surgical methods like gastric bypass.
Sleeve gastrectomy is generally not recommended for obese patients with uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes or severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If the primary goal is the treatment of diabetes rather than obesity, there are other more effective surgical methods available for these conditions.
Sleeve gastrectomy offers the possibility of being converted to other bariatric or metabolic surgical techniques if needed in the future. Converting a sleeve gastrectomy to more comprehensive metabolic surgical procedures like gastric bypass or Duodenal Switch via a second surgical intervention is relatively easy.
