To understand varicocele, self-examination can reveal irregularities, swelling, or pain in the testicle. If these symptoms appear, a specialist should be consulted. Varicocele examination is part of a genital examination. The patient should be examined standing in a room temperature of 21-22 degrees Celsius. The testicles and genital area are observed while the patient stands upright. The patient is examined visually and manually, both in a normal position and while performing Valsalva maneuvers. The presence of dilation in the vascular structure should be determined with and without Valsalva maneuvers. These procedures clinically establish the presence of a varicocele. However, to support the clinical diagnosis, determine the grade of varicocele, and to decide on surgery, a scrotal Doppler ultrasonography is performed.
